Black Box is an exhibition of recent gallery-based film and video productions. Presenting its artists in sequence (instead of simultaneously), Black Box allows viewers to experience each work on a large scale in the entire 3,300-square-foot gallery.
Black Box features a diverse group of international artists, including London-based video artist Maria Marshall; New York-based conceptual artist Silvia Kolbowski; Arthur Jafa, who worked as cinematographer on Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut and Spike Lee's Malcolm X; Miami-based filmmaker Dara Friedman; Jordan Crandall, whose work incorporates video, digital effects and high-tech surveillance apparatuses; and the Bay Area underground film cooperative SILT.
In recent years, gallery-based film and video projection has become one of the most widely used media. These works fall between the genres of cinematic film and video, on the one hand, and installation art on the other. Gallery-based projection works engage the dimension of time inherent in film and video projection as well as the distinctive qualities of projected and reflected light. Unlike most cinematic works, they frequently do not need to be viewed from beginning to end; rather, like installations, they offer an immersing ambience that the viewer can enter and exit at will.
Black Box presents a wide range of approaches to gallery-based film and video projection, from works that aspire to the condition of painting, to those that include both sculptural and filmic components, to a work in which film is but one element in a multimedia performance. Each artist will present one or two works over approximately one week, and will give a public lecture immediately following his or her reception; SILT will give one performance on February 25.
